Hello girls, great job during Friday’s musIQ lesson, we got a lot done today. I believe you all went through the lesson that taught you all about ‘bouncy’ or ‘staccato’ notes, and ‘smooth’, ‘legato’ notes. Staccato and legato are italian terms that are written in music to signify how the notes should be played: sharp and detached (staccato) OR smooth and connected (legato). The lesson today was pretty neat because we attached the speakers to the computer so our music resonated loudly throughout the whole classroom!
We also visited the improvisation room where I got you all to write and record your own melodies, of which you saved to the library. The library is not only a place that stores pieces that we have composed but we can listen to famous songs written by composers like Mozart and Bach. You can also find new songs to practice and play in addition to ones you are familiar with from your lessons.
In our lesson for this week you guys learnt about notes that can go higher and higher, or lower and lower. I also introduced terminology like ‘treble clef’ and ‘bass clef’… Our grand staff is divided into two sections, one devoted to the notes below middle c that go ‘lower and lower’ -which is normally associated with the bass clef; while the other section is for notes above middle c that go ‘higher and higher’-and is associated with the treble clef. The picture below shows what the staff looks like. This staff is composed of both bass clef (on the bottom) and treble clef (at the top)…
As we can see from the picture above, starting from middle c and going up, each note steps up one line or space. Now let’s go backwards from middle c and down, the notes are stepping down.
****Lauren and Kaitlyn: For homework I would like you to complete this worksheet and try to remember to bring it in for next class. You are to circle the notes that step up ‘higher and higher’ and step down ‘lower and lower’ like you went over in your lesson.
***Alyvia: complete this worksheet for next class, as it will prepare you for what is to come next lesson… ‘Double notes’ are notes that we play at the same time…
For a bonus if you would like to try this matching worksheet which is based on grand staff terminology.
Thanks for another great class girls. Have a great weekend, I will see you next week!
